As many know, it saves you money.  It may cost a bit more in the beginning, but that is a mere investment in your home, plus, the money you will save each month will build up enough to where the system will pay for itself.  It is also environmentally friendly as it is a renewable source of energy and doesn’t put off any emissions into the atmosphere as do the traditional methods of producing energy.  It is also extremely low maintenance, and sometimes considered no maintenance, as you will not have wires to hook up and replace, and is completely rechargeable by the sun itself.  These are the advantages.

Some of the solar energy disadvantages are the initial cost of the setup of the system.  This is, however, countered by the previous paragraph as to how it will eventually pay for itself.  Another disadvantage is the fact that the production will be affected by the presence of clouds or even pollution that is in the air, making it use some of the stored energy that is generally for the night time or emergencies, and the non production in the dark hours, as well.  A battery backup would easily eliminate this issue and can be done relatively cheap.

Ultimately, you will have to siphon through the solar energy advantages and disadvantages to determine if it is the proper move for you to take.  It is a big step to take knowing how power has been supplied for so many years but most will tell you that once you do decide to “go green” that you will definitely see the advantages outweighing the disadvantages.
